There are several varieties of ginger. The variety grown in India and in Sri Lanka is used both as fresh, raw and dry ginger. In Sri Lanka, they use the small bulb roots for auyrvedic purposes. The same plant possesses different ayurvedic properties when it is raw and dried. Ginger has many different properties. For example, ginger relieves phlegm and wind, improves appetite, relieves pain and soothes the nerves. It is an ancient practice to eat a little ginger with salt, sugar or bee’s honey before meals to prevent indigestion. Ginger is used in several ways; applying grounded ginger mixed with cold water on the scalp or head will relieve headaches. Ginger is also known to help relieve pain from chronic rheumatism, while drinking boiled ginger helps stop diarrhoea.
